Pressure Relieving Mattress
Hi

My mum is having dementia (Stage 3) and had 2 strokes which caused her to be bed-ridden.

Unfortunately, she just developed bed sores and there were infections.  Heard from the doctor that besides bed sores, she has this medical condition called abscess (I think) and so the doc is trying to drain the pus through bedside cleaning.

As her bed sores is most prob at stage 3-4, I will definitely need to get a pressure relieving mattress for mum when she is home (which I want to).  Do you know what brands and types to get?

I am so confused now with what everyone is saying.  The cost is also another issue that I have to reckon with.  Seems that the problems never stop and its so painful to see my mum in her current condition.  The worst thing is the doctor told me that this is something that I will most prob get to experience it more as her condition will only turn for the worst.  He told me that it could be years before it becomes life threatening or it could be days.  That he cannot tell me and I feel so frustrated that I cannot seem to do anything except hold her hand and tell mum that I love her.

As I am now working, thus we have a helper who help with my mum condition.  There are times whereby I feel so guilty that I am not spending enough time with her.  Though she cannot talk, I feel that I can at least try to talk more to her,.  I just feel so guilty and helpless at this point in time.

Re: Pressure Relieving Mattress
First, stop feeling guilty.  Caregiving is hard, and sometimes endless!  You obviously care.
Second, a stage 3 bedsore is a very big deal.  A pressure relieving mattress may not be enough.  She should be turned, off her sore, every 2 hours until the sore is healed. After that, an alternating inflatable mattress is the best, although I don't know brands. They are expensive, but medicare will pay for them and so will most insurance. Is she in the hospital now?  I suggest talking with the nurses, not the doctors, about how you will bring her home and what skills you need to learn for yourself and teaching caregivers. Its true that the doctor doesn't know what will happen to this sore, but staying off if it is critical for it to heal.
Good luck to you and hang in there.  You are doing a wonderful job in very very hard circumstances...
