Lifting
Need to lift my mother from bed to commode.  Other than a hoist, which is too big for her bedroom, what other tool is available?

Re: Lifting

I am a Hospice Nurse with Enclara Health, and we encounter many folks like you, in need of support while caring for their loved ones.   Safety is foremost when you consider the transfer needs of those you are caring for.  Safety of your Mother as well as your own safety while assisting her.  Experts in transfer techniques include Physical Therapists, often a Primary Care Physician orders will include teaching transfer techniques when it’s needed in the home environment.    If that is possible, discuss it with your Mom’s Physician.  You also have a resource in your local Medical Supply Store – they carry what is known as durable medical equipment, which is all things medical that caregivers might need other than prescriptions.  They carry a variety of transfer devices including the hoist lift you mentioned which utilizes a sling approach to transferring, but does take up floor/room space. There are also belts, slide and transfer boards, which allow the caregiver to grip, support and assist an individual being transferred.  The device that would most fit your needs will depend also on your Mom’s ability to bear weight or not, as well as your own lifting, transferring capabilities.  You want to ensure that you are protected from any lift related injury.  If you are looking for a website that displays some of these options, you can do an internet search for “durable medical equipment” – or look up your local medical supply store on line, then look for transfer lifts or belts.  I hope this is helpful, stay safe while caring for your Mom!

Re: Lifting
I am a CNA and I agree souly with the nurse in her advice as a professional care giver safety is most important for you and your mother. Depending on her level of transfering needs the slide board with a gait belt is great tools to use especialy if she has good upper body strenght to assist you. The nurse is right about physical therapy to teach you additional skills as we as pro care providers have to learn and you will find these skilles to be very good tools for safety and well being. I have been doing this 21 years and I am glad to have the resources we have today as we all are as care providers
